Affiliate Trademark and PPC Rules Before You Buy Ads

Paid search can create immediate violations when a publisher bids on advertiser names, misspellings or restricted terms. Approval into a program is not permission to use every keyword or brand phrase.

Read the program-specific paid-search section

Look for trademarks, misspellings, domain use, ad copy, display URLs, direct linking, shopping ads and coupon terms.

Save the current negative-keyword list and record the date it was applied.

Separate generic and brand intent

Generic problem keywords may be allowed while brand terms are prohibited. Do not assume adding a modifier such as review or discount makes brand bidding acceptable.

Check whether landing pages must contain original content and disclosures.

Control accounts and agencies

Communicate restrictions to anyone running ads, including contractors. Audit search-term reports and automated campaign expansion.

Pause campaigns when rules are unclear; post-violation reversal can exceed the revenue gained.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bid on a competitor's brand?

Only if the program, advertising platform and applicable law permit it. Rules differ and legal review may be needed.
