Affiliate Link Tracking: A Small Publisher's Control Sheet
Link management is an operational system. You should know where a link appears, which official destination it uses, when it was checked and what happens if the program closes.
Create a link register
Record program, destination, tracking source, page, placement, disclosure, review date and owner. Keep program IDs or private credentials out of public repositories.
Use approved deep-link tools and redirects only when program terms permit them.
Validate the journey
Test HTTP status, final domain, mobile behavior and whether parameters survive. Do not perform self-purchases when prohibited.
Set alerts or scheduled checks for high-value links, but manually review unusual redirects.
Preserve privacy and interpretation
Use aggregate click data where possible and document consent requirements for analytics. A click does not prove purchase intent or content quality.
Compare network reports with site analytics carefully because time zones, blockers and attribution differ.
Frequently asked questions
Can I shorten every affiliate link?
Only if the program permits redirects or cloaking and the final destination remains transparent and safe.
